Strange Requests from Indian Brides

In an effort to be unique and offer something completely different, wedding planners in India are noticing that some requests are a bit strange lately.

Even though Bollywood themes that center on blockbuster films such as Devdas and Jodha Akbar and other Bollywood hits have been common in weddings, the trend has turned more toward films made in Hollywood and the Oscars instead. Others want to recreate far-flung destinations such as a desert in Goa, Venice or the Eiffel Tower.

Delhi based wedding decor stylist Swati Pandya Sood said in a recent interview that clients can come up with some pretty odd requests and really have no concept of how impractical an idea it is. One such request was to recreate the Seven Wonders of the World at the wedding venue and a request to also come up with an eighth wonder that would be a surprise for wedding guests. Sood gently told his client how impractical it was but came up with a theme for the wedding that had never been done before.

Other requests include doing an entire wedding with absolutely no flowers because the bride felt that flowers were overdone. In a Hindu wedding, flowers are an integral part of the ceremonies. However, this bride wants even the traditional varmala to be created without a single blossom. Sood came up with a varmala that would be made with real rubies and emeralds and fabric instead.

Trains, Planes, and Automobiles – for a wedding?

Other weddings have attempted to recreate London’s Heathrow Airport, while another wanted to recreate the feel and ambiance of a railway station. One client requested a set that resembled the streets of New York City while others wanted Venetian canals and the flea market of a French Ville.

Abhishek Kaushik was asked by a client to create a scale replica of the Eiffel Tower where there would be a bar located at the top of the structure. Originally, the couple wanted to descend from the top of recreated Eiffel Tower structure, but Abhishek had to politely refuse because it was far too risky a proposition.

Themed Weddings

If you desire to have a wedding theme, you may want to start out by clipping pictures form magazines or what you find on line. Also, be sure to jot down some of your ideas about what kind of event you want to create. Elaborate sets and recreation of award shows such as the Oscars, can take many months of planning and working with engineers to build such a venue. When money is no object, the limit can be imagination and what a wedding planner is willing or able to do.
