Most people think that when you get married, there need to be two people involved. Over the past decade, however, a new phenomenon has arisen. Today it is possible for a person to marry themselves.
That’s what happened when Jennifer Hammer, dressed in a full-length, red strapless gown stood before 70 guests and bridesmaids at the Courtyard Marriot Hotel in Walla Walla.
It all started when Hammer quipped to her friends that she’d marry herself just so she could register for gifts. Back then she had no idea that self-marriage or “sologamy” was actually a thing.
Those who wish to marry themselves can order the kit, “I Married Me”. The kit consists of self-affirmations, suggested vows and a wedding ring and can range in price.
Creators of the kit, Jeffrey Levin and his wife Bonnie Powers have married 200 more people to themselves over the past five years.
The concept seems to be catching on as the idea of self-marriage has been shown on mainstream television shows such as Glee and Sex in the City. The idea seems to be making the rounds on the newsstand in high-circulation publications such as Time and Cosmopolitan.
When couples decide to tie the knot and get married, they have their own personal reasons. The same holds true for individuals who decide to wed themselves. For Hammer, by the time she reached her 40th birthday and had been a high school teacher for more than a decade, she wanted to shake things up for herself. She wanted to have a celebration and she wanted a party.
While she knows that her decision might have been a little bit selfish, she thought it would be the perfect time to commit to herself and give herself that party. She bought the dress and the kit and made her plans.
Hammer is not alone. According to author Sasha Cagan, author of “Quirkyalone: A Manifesto for Uncompromising Romantics”, More people are embracing their singlehood as a way to stay true one’s self without compromise.
While she was writing her book and in the years since them, Cagan has seen both women and men opt to wed themselves – and as a statement to the world that they don’t need to have a mate in order to survive in the world.
